Take Kora lessons during your holidays in Senegal, a typical West African instrument
The Kora is a West African stringed instrument that belongs tot the harp-family and is played with both hands.
The Kora is many hundreds of years old. The appearance of the kora seems more like a guitar rather than a harp. The kora is a calabash which is covered by the skin of a cow or an antelope. Between the calabash and the mahogany neck of the kora 21 strings are stretched into two groups - 11 left and 10 right. In Senegal, the Kora is widely used to add luster to parties.
Playing Kora: a lesson in agility
You need quite a bit of agility to play this instrument. A musical background however is not necessary! Of course the lessons are easier to follow if you already play a stringed instrument. We have found a good Kora-player who can teach you the basics. For the more experienced player it would be an excellent opportunity to play together with a Kora master from Senegal.
The price for a two hour Kora lesson is around €10,-
